About Maxwell Grant
Founder — Internet Business SA | Cape Town, South Africa
I started my first online business more than 10 years ago while running a courier company in the Western Cape. Since then, I've built and lost rankings, survived Google algorithm updates, and figured out what actually works for South Africans looking to earn income online.
What Internet Business SA Is About
Internet Business SA is a Cape Town-based resource for South Africans who want to earn more — whether that means a side income alongside a day job, courier and owner-driver work, freelance opportunities, or building a full online business from scratch.
Every guide on this site is written from real experience in the South African context. That means rand figures, SA platforms, local regulations, and the honest realities of building income in this economy — not recycled American hustle advice that doesn't apply here.

The Story Behind This Site
How it started — courier business and a side project
I launched my first website more than a decade ago without any outside investment. At the time I was running a courier operation in the Western Cape, so the online work was strictly part-time — evenings and weekends only. That limited bandwidth is one reason it took several years to generate meaningful income.
I later enrolled in a one-year university course on Internet and Web Design, which I completed with distinction. In practice, though, the real education came from building responsive HTML and CSS sites before WordPress existed, and from spending hundreds of hours studying SEO — what actually moves the needle on Google, and what wastes your time.
The first real break
About five years in, I came across a post on a business forum from someone who had earned over R1.8 million in a single month through affiliate marketing. Most people in that thread were sceptical. I started asking different questions.
That conversation sparked an approach I hadn't tried before. Within months I had identified a profitable niche, confirmed there were affiliate programmes paying solid commissions, built a site, and started driving traffic. That site climbed to the number-one spot on Google for most of its target keywords and held that position for nearly three years.
The Google Penguin reset — and what came after
The Google Penguin algorithm update in 2012 wiped out that site overnight. Three years of work, gone. It was a hard lesson.
But losing that site forced a better approach. I rebuilt — this time following Google's own guidelines on content quality and link building. It's slower. It's also more durable. The sites I've built since have weathered every major update, including the Helpful Content updates of 2023 and 2024.
Why a specifically South African site
Most "make money online" sites are built for American or British audiences. Rand amounts don't appear. SA platforms aren't mentioned. The tax and banking realities here are ignored completely.
South Africans searching for income opportunities deserve a resource built for their actual situation — one that mentions Checkers Sixty60 driver registration, which courier companies in SA are looking for owner drivers, how much a freelance writer in South Africa can realistically earn per month, and what it actually costs to start an online business with a weak rand.
That's the gap Internet Business SA exists to fill.

Starting Your Own Online Business in South Africa in 2026
Building an online income in South Africa is harder than it was ten years ago. There is more competition. There are more platforms competing for the same attention. Algorithms are more complex.
It is also more accessible than it has ever been. Free tools exist that used to cost thousands. You can reach a global audience from a R800 smartphone. Platforms like Takealot, Fiverr, and Upwork give South Africans direct access to paying customers without needing capital.
You need three things: a clear niche, consistent effort over at least six months, and a willingness to keep learning. None of those cost money.
